Twitter Users Hilariously Troll Donald Trump Over Mexico Visit

Donald Trump is going to Mexico on Wednesday, and Twitter users can’t stop laughing about it.

The Republican presidential candidate has said Mexican immigrants were “bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” He’s vowed to deport all immigrants who crossed the border without permission, and repeatedly promised to build a wall between the two nations and make Mexico pay for it.

In response, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto compared Trump to Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini

Here’s how some on Twitter responded to what’s bound to be an awkward meeting:

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Gorillas, Love And Acts Of Service

I had the weirdest vision this morning. As I meditated while stretched out in bed, I saw a vision of a large gorilla, walking upright, followed by a smaller one. The surroundings were green and lush. I had asked for some clarity about a program that I have been guided to create and this mini movie showed up. And let me tell you, it felt like a movie. The colors were vibrant and the picture was as clear as if I were sitting in a big screen movie theater. Needless to say, I was intrigued.

I often have weird visions. I love this about my spirit. I am a detective at heart, so I get to fill this part of my soul by doing the research. I have several guidebooks that I often reference for meanings of things. Plus, I tend to do Google searches on the “dream symbolism” or “spiritual symbolism” when a bizarre vision reveals itself to me. This gorilla vision was definitely bizarre, so I jumped out of bed and grabbed Ted Andrews’ Animal-Speak Pocket Guide.

There was one line in the gorilla description that hit me: “Focus on the care of others for your greatest success.”

BOOM! I immediately knew that I was being reminded to think of this program that I’m creating as my way of being of service. I’m sharing my gifts to help care for others. And by focusing on sharing my gifts as my greatest act of service, this is where I’ll feel the most successful.

We tend to think of caring for others as doing everything for them. But true caring comes when we live from our hearts and share our gifts.

Here’s the problem: Unless you are willing to look within and discover your gifts, you don’t get to be of service this way.

In the past when I thought I was being of service, a lot of the time my acts came with attachments. I did things to help because I thought I had to. I wanted to be seen as good. Being good meant that I would receive love in return. I never thought of myself as seeking love. But when I began to check in with myself, I discovered my acts of service did indeed have attachments.

If you are serving because you are looking for others’ approval, you are acting from your head and will never truly feel the beauty in serving with your gifts.

Unconditional love is the path out of your head to sever attachments.

As you go within and honor your truth, your gifts are revealed. You feel so connected and on fire about life! Your life feels full and on purpose. And in this purpose, you serve without attachments. THIS is where you discover true joy.

Have you ever heard someone say, “I did blah, blah, blah, and THIS is how I’m repaid”? That’s an act of service with attachments.

It’s our attachment to the outcome that shuts down our joy.

If you’re in business and focus on what you can “get” rather than how you might be of service, you’re probably going to struggle because you’re in your head rather than your heart. And when you’re in your head, there is no joy.

Serving from your heart and sharing your gifts puts God first. But as you focus on service with the need to get something in return, you attach yourself to the outcome and disconnect from God.

Serving from your heart shifts you from survival mode into love mode. It is here where miracles show up. Love mode is where every need is met, your relationships heal, and your life soars with joy.

After I had the gorilla vision show up this morning, my hubby and I took our dogs for a walk. Of course, I had to share my experience with Charlie. Doing so reminded me how hard it is for most to keep the attitude of being in service. It’s all about the attitude. Are you going to come from your head or from your heart? Are you going to serve out of survival or love?

We own JumpinGoat Coffee Roasters. This is Charlie’s baby. We offer gourmet coffees, candies and other various products. The normal attitude in this kind of business would be to think about sales and the bottom line. After all, we have to survive, right? But it is this attitude that keeps a business owner in competition and struggle mode.

A different way to look at this coffee business, and every other business, is to see the service we are providing to others. With our company, think of all the people who get up in the morning and sit quietly drinking that cup of coffee. They are taking a moment to themselves. This is love. We are providing that service.

Our JumpinGoat retail store is in Helen, Georgia. This is a tourist town in which people from all over come to get away. Families, couples, and all kinds of groups, whether Harley crowds or bachelorette parties, visit us to make memories. Our store is just one place. Every business and winery here in the mountains of Georgia is in service, helping people have fun and enjoy themselves.

When I think about how we got into the coffee business, I am reminded that some years ago, Charlie had gotten in touch with his heart and discovered how he wanted to create his life. He had a vision of living in the mountains and having a coffee company. He loves food. He loves the mountains. And he loves serving people. His whole business started with love and getting in touch with who he is and his gifts.

My gorilla vision this morning reminded me that I had done this as well and to continue to serve by sharing my gifts. What about you? Are you sharing yours?

If you truly want to be of service, make a commitment to love yourself unconditionally. Get in touch with your heart. What makes you tick? Discover what makes you unique. Instead of being attached to seeking love and joy outside of yourself, find the love within and share your gifts!

My Family Swore Off Screen Time For 48 Hours, And I’m Fascinated By What Happened

This summer, I often found myself parked on the couch with the kiddos watching television or movies in the comfort of our air-conditioned home. Until the moment it hit me: Was I truly connecting with my daughters while we were plopped on the couch staring at screens? Not so much. There wasn’t a lot of talking going on, and we often just sat around, slumped over, with minimal interaction.

With that in mind, I decided to embark on an experiment a couple of weekends ago. There would be no televisions and no screens allowed for 48 hours. My daughters are 5 and 3 years old, and they love watching shows and playing games on their devices — but I wanted to try something completely new.

My promise to my girls was that we would have way more fun doing things together than we would if we just engaged in screen time. They were skeptical at first — meaning, they threw some pretty big tantrums — but once we got in the car and headed to our first destination, things started to turn around quickly.

Feeling Like A Kid Again At The Water Park

screen senseThe two girls pose with their father during their water park adventure.

What we did:
Our first screen-free excursion was to our local water park. I sprayed them with water guns, splashed around and chased them all over the place for hours. After, there was no need to beg them to take naps, because they were completely exhausted (and so was I).

What we got out of it:
The kids had a blast, but the best part for me was that I felt like a child again. I know this will make me sound like an old guy, but when I was a kid, I played outside all of the time. And you know what? I had a lot of fun. In my mind, that’s way more fun than being hunched over a device, indoors. I’m going to do my part to ensure we spend more time feeling the wind blow through our hair ( … well, maybe not my hair, but you catch my drift).

Real Life Is Deliciously Messy

screen sense
Doyin’s youngest daughter hard at work making cookies.

What we did:
I put my daughters to work by helping me bake a batch of cookies. They put on their chef hats, cracked eggs, measured the ingredients and used the mixer. Sure, they ended up making an epic mess, but the most epic messes end up leading to the most epic memories.

What we got out of it:
As parents, we know that our kids want to be around us all of the time. That’s not always a good thing, especially if you want to use the bathroom in peace — but there are times when it can work to our benefit. Not only was I able to teach my daughters some essential cooking skills, but I was able to show them that it’s normal and expected to see dads preparing meals in the kitchen, too.

A Window On The World Beats The Best Screen

screen sense
Doyin’s two daughters people-watch together.

What we did:
This candid photo was taken at our local mall. The girls sat in chairs, looked out of the window and made observations about what they saw in the neighborhood. All of this went on for about 30 minutes while I relaxed and ate a snack in the background.

What we got out of it:
So often we end up spending big money on fancy birthday parties and other material items for our kids. But then we ask ourselves — will they remember any of that stuff? I don’t remember one birthday party I had as a kid, but I remember the fun moments that I spent with my brothers that were similar to the time my daughters spent together at the mall. The best part is, these moments don’t cost a dime — and the payoff is priceless.

What Two Days Without Screens Taught Us

The thing I enjoyed the most from this experiment was watching how my girls interacted with each other. Instead of fighting over which show to watch or which app to use, they talked, laughed and enjoyed a sense of togetherness.

The reality is our kids grow up so fast. Before we know it, they’ll be adults, and we’ll regret the missed opportunities to bond with them as little ones. Eliminating TV time for a couple of days showed me how easy, cost-effective and wonderful the simple things in life can be.

Is it realistic for me as a parent to permanently ban all television and devices from my household? Absolutely not. But it’s certainly realistic for me to limit them more than I currently do. Fortunately, since our no-screen vacation, my girls are now onboard with spending less time in front of their screens, and our whole household benefits from that. Because at the end of the day, there isn’t an app that can replace good old-fashioned family bonding.

Stephen Colbert Thanks Anthony Weiner For Making His Job Much Easier

Stephen Colbert mocked former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) over his latest scandal in a pun-tastic penis-themed monologue on Monday.

The Late Show” host ridiculed Weiner, who was again caught sexting a woman who wasn’t his wife, the New York Post reported. The beleaguered politician is now separating from his wife Huma Abedin, a top aide to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

“August is a notoriously slow news month, and it can be hard for me to find stuff to talk about,” said Colbert. “Fortunately, something popped up: Anthony Weiner.”

It’s July 14 And My Life Has Just Changed Completely

It’s the morning of July 14, 1980. I awaken to the sounds of a mourning dove outside my window and a view of Boulder’s sacred limestone slabs reaching into the clouds; these front range Rocky Mountain slopes are where my husband and I once spent happy afternoons climbing, hiking and feeling invincible.

Yesterday, this elegant and strong young man died from cancer at the age of 34. His death ended a year of unforgettable suffering for both of us. My ego tells me this is a deplorable soul-sucking tragedy. Paul was the most loving man I’d ever known and did not deserve to suffer and die before his life could unfold – before we could have our future.

No one will ever love me like that again, says the ego mind. I’m alone, grief-stricken, and sick with heartbreak. I’m scarred for life – just as he was at the end. But I’m still here and he is not.

This voice in my head crushes and flattens me, pushes me back into bed, feels like molten lead pouring down. It deletes my future. I feel miniscule underneath these heavy thoughts. “Why would my husband die of cancer when everyone else our age is launching careers and having babies? What kind of loser am I?” whispers the ego.

Hours later and with tremendous effort, I push out of bed and step outside on the balcony, gazing up at the jagged pink flatirons jutting into a cloudless sky. I take a deep breath and observe their beauty, remember their promise.

It stirs a memory of a time when I first chose Boulder, chose to come to Colorado from the flatlands, with no money or job, just courage and determination. I wanted to break away from old fear patterns, to climb these dizzy rocks even though they terrified me. Magical things happened when I got here; an impossible mountain climbing career, marvelous friends, soul-mate-love and unprecedented happiness.

This reminiscence stirs a powerful recognition inside of me. I’ve chosen the path of courage before. And it served me well.

The voice of inner wisdom that has been knocked out of me for the past year, now whispers: This is your greatest moment. Every lesson you came to learn in order to push into your soul’s potential and align with your highest self, lives in this very instant of devastating grief.

The energy of these words lights me up, gives me breath. My mind chatter quiets and I hear my higher self say: Paul was your greatest spiritual teacher. He revealed his spirit to you as he left his body. He took you on a spiritual journey disguised as a healing journey. It was your healing journey, not his. It was his gift to you.

Over the next few months, I begin to realize that all the things we experienced together in the year of his dying – the meditations, healers, Native American ceremonies, and his fully conscious exit from his body – were all for me. He was finished with this lifetime, not meant to stay longer, just long enough to show me that I was worthy of love and could reach into my soul to find wisdom and courage. He helped me see life in a new way.

“You’ve never been alone,” whispers this inner voice of the divine. “You’ve been held in love and light even in your darkest moment. You must choose which path to take now. This is your choice point.”

The next few years of my life play out as up and down as a roller coaster. Sometimes I’m able to embrace my divine lens view and move forward. Other times I’m lost in self-pity, self-doubt and the blind confusion of anger and grief.

Yet my choice will ultimately be for trusting my soul’s wisdom and consciously taking the spiritual path that gets me here – writing this to you.

Our journeys are never one straight line of uninterrupted wisdom and enlightened action. Neither are they one continuous journey of negativity and fear. All of us vacillate between our ego lens and divine lens perspectives. We spend time viewing life through each lens so that we can make a fully realized choice. These two viewpoints battle for dominance inside of us until our heart finally chooses. This choice becomes the essence of who we are.

Technology: Modern Help for the Aging Mind

McLean Hospital Guest Blogger
Ipsit Vahia, MD

2016-08-30-1472516200-4830645-VahiaHeadshot198Ap616.jpgDigital technology isn’t just a domain for younger generations. It also has amazing potential for activating the mind and improving the quality of life in older adults.

How do older adults use technology?

A common misconception is that older adults are technophobic. One reason behind this thinking may be older people’s relative lack of exposure to technology. Whereas technology is a compulsory part of life for most school-age children and working adults, using technology is largely voluntary for older adults.

Another reason may be an unclear understanding about how older adults use technology. They don’t tend to explore technology the way that teenagers or younger adults do, but are more apt to focus on a specific feature that is particularly useful to them. Research shows that if the technology has a clear, targeted purpose, older adults are both interested in and quite capable of adopting it.

What should older adults use smart technology for?

Smart technology can be useful for seniors in many ways. It can help to increase physical activity, improve connectedness with others, stimulate the brain, and improve mood. The key is that the technology should have a meaningful purpose, not just be a means to pass the time.

Exercise, for instance, is one of the most reliable means of improving longevity and mental health, and technology can help to make it more accessible and fun. While walking and going to the gym can be great for both exercise and socialization, these aren’t always viable options for seniors. However, the Nintendo Wii and other gaming systems that incorporate physical activity provide a safe, year-round alternative for getting meaningful–mental and physical–exercise. This is evidenced by recent research showing that the Wii helps to reduce depression in older adults as well as improve balance and mobility in patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Wearable fitness trackers may also have a role in helping older adults remain motivated for exercise. Conversely, clinicians can use these trackers as a tool to help detect psychiatric issues when activity levels decline. In fact, in a recent research paper, we demonstrated how data from a wrist-worn fitness monitor can assist clinicians in diagnosing depression.

Older adults also should focus on pursuing something they have always loved to do or have always wanted to do. Enjoyment correlates with success and adherence. Whatever their interest is–e.g., music, puzzles, or languages–they should look for an app or software that helps them engage in these pursuits in an easier, yet still meaningful, way. Learning a language, for instance, can now be done online, often with the option of interacting with other people.

Have you seen older adults have success with adopting new technology?

My grandmother, who lives in India, isn’t (or at least she wasn’t) technologically savvy, but that didn’t stop her from figuring out a unique way to attend a family wedding in the United States. She purchased a tablet, ordered the installation of Wi-Fi in her house for the first time, and set up a Skype account so that she could watch and participate in the celebration. While she positioned herself in front of her tablet in India, a rotation of cousins at the wedding in the US held a separate tablet in a corner of the room to enable her to watch every part of the ceremony. We even have photos of the bride and groom holding a tablet framing my grandmother’s image.

Once she realized that these technologies could enable her to have a presence at the wedding, she was enthusiastic to learn. Beyond giving her a sense of purpose, it gave her a means to connect with others and challenge her mind.

Why is lifelong learning important?

Learning should be a lifelong pursuit. Recent research shows us that brain cells continue to grow during a person’s eighth and ninth decades, and we know that older adults who remain engaged in learning experience a better quality of life. By embracing digital technology, older adults will have greater opportunities to reap the benefits of keeping their minds (and bodies) active. If you don’t believe me, get on Skype and ask my grandmother about it.

‘The Kiss of Judas’: will the Heart of Europe be sacrificed once more?

This article was co-authored with Zuzana Palovic – CEE and Migration Expert & Gabriela Bereghazyova – CEE and Corruption Expert

2016-08-30-1472544250-8873316-HP3.jpg

(Soviet Occupation of Czechoslovakia, Bratislava 1968, photographer Ladislav Bielik)

Could the fall of Europe come from its very heart? With anxiety and panic shaking up the old continent, this year’s EU presidency country Slovakia finds itself at the epicenter. Located on the bufferzone of where East meets West. It holds a finger on the pulse of global security, with war-torn Ukraine at its doorstep. This month’s 48th anniversary of the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia brings into perspective recent history. As old member states squabble over leaving the EU, this invisible nation walks an ever tighter rope. Could the destabilization of the Union mark a renewal of Russian influence in Europe’s East-West gateway?

“Who rules Eastern Europe commands the heartland, who rules the heartland commands the world” – Sir Halford Mackinder, the founding father of geopolitics

Europe’s heartland has been at the nexus of competing influences dating back to the Middle Ages. In the past century alone, Eastern Europe has been scarred by more conflicts, wars and regime changes than any other region in the world, including the Middle East. Visitors are often shocked to learn of the great volatility in this picturesque part of Europe.

Located between powerhouses, the continent’s anxieties find their clearest expression in the bufferzone. The region bridges worlds when times are good and bears the brunt of wars when times are bad. For over a quarter of a century, times have certainly been good. Since the collapse of the Iron Curtain, the region has experienced much growth, prosperity and peace. Old divides were removed when 8 former Soviet-Bloc states joined the EU at the turn of the millennium.

Is the Golden Era of European stability coming to end?

Germany’s vision for a united Europe has been greatly destabilized since Britain’s decision to exit. Losing the second strongest economy is a major blow to the world’s largest market. A sinking dream, European bureaucrats have been sent into a tail-spin to strengthen the fortress. On top of that, the mounting refugee crisis has done little to calm down the turmoil. Stress continues to build as thousands upon thousands of refugees march into Europe on foot, defying any sense of traditional borders. It does not help that the former Eastern-Bloc countries refuse to absorb their fair share of migrant quotas. The politically sensitive issue has inflamed emotions on both sides, polarizing East-West relations to a point unseen since the Cold War

On the other side, there is the ‘Mother Bear’ Russia, growing ever more confident in its ambitions and vision. Under Putin’s leadership, Moscow’s position as a global power has only seemed to strengthen. Although they are not overtly expansionist, the Russians have nevertheless proven swift in their claim over Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. In a world where actions speak louder than words, or papers for that matter, a shocked EU has been left standing on the sidelines. The greater West is further weakened by an undecided US. Evidently, military engagement over the European borderlands remains as contested today as ever.

Walking past overflowing cafes of any major European capital, things may seem rosy, even romantic in the late summer breeze. Yet, a strong undercurrent can also be felt. A new power vortex is forming. Somewhere between bruised Germany, isolationist Britain, apathetic USA and expanding Russia, an inconspicuous Eastern Europe finds itself in the dead center.

Amidst all this instability, the past offers shocking insights

The little known country of Slovakia may be critical to unlocking this knowledge. It has been recently tipped off as a country to watch by George Friedman, a geopolitical forecaster. This information comes as no surprise to seasoned strategists and insiders.

2016-08-30-1472543684-1618483-HP2.jpg

(Slovakia West-East Gateway, Eurozone Map of Europe)

A contradiction to many, Slovakia has been very careful in formulating its foreign policies towards both East and West. Its Prime Minister sways towards Russia, while the country’s President favors a strong alliance with the US. The country is a member of NATO. However, unlike its Czech and Polish neighbors, Slovakia is not part of the missile defense system. Why all this caution?

The country once played the role of the sacrificial lamb in European politics

The Munich Agreement, referred to as the ‘Munich betrayal’ by many Slovaks, saw the surrender of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany. The move was seen by the West as a necessary concession to avoid a war. It was considered a callous gentleman’s agreement that oversaw the abandonment of a small nation in favor of the powerful. Yet, in the end, it did nothing to stop the war which claimed over 70 million lives.

2016-08-30-1472543624-1047476-HP1.jpg

(Statesmen of World War I is an oil on canvas painting by Sir James Guthrie, completed in 1930)

Another so-called ‘Kiss of Judas’ came 30 years later. This time the ‘assailant’ bore the Russian colors. In the summer of 1968, Soviet tanks rolled through the peaceful streets in an act nothing short of an occupation. It swiftly brought to an end the liberation era and slow opening to the West. This tactical move exposed just how strategic the Eastern buffer-zone was to Russian interest. What followed was brutal suppression and the borders of Eastern Europe continued to be caged from within.

Today, Slovakia hosts the EU Presidency. Its job is to keep quarrelling Europe together. Harmonizing the tensions is proving difficult. Torn in the middle of a sharpening divide between East and West, Slovakia’s anxiety should not be viewed as localized. In uncertain times, Europe must pay close attention to the continent’s smallest members. Neglect from the West, can easily open the gateway, tipping the balance of world power in the heart of Europe.

Mindful Dating III

The dynamics we have with our primary caregivers when we are young have a tremendous influence on our dating choices later in life.

In all of my workshops I teach a section on Attachment Theory. John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth theorized that people develop either secure or insecure attachment styles very early in life. Many people in our culture exhibit one of three types of insecure attachment styles:

1. Fearful/avoidant
2. Anxious
3. Disorganized

We must be cognizant of the dynamics that we have with each of our parents because those manifest later as attachment styles. For example, if our fathers or mothers were aloof and emotionally withholding, we should not be surprised if we are attracted to partners who turn out to be aloof and withholding.

There is a part of us that becomes what we loved and admired as children, and there is a part of us that becomes what we hated and despised as children.

Specifically, I have found that the wounded child in all of us feels betrayed because all he or she wanted was to be loved UNCONDITIONALLY and grew up in a society that primarily provided tools to gain love CONDITIONALLY – because we received good grades, behaved correctly, looked good, were good athletes, spoke well, earned money, were talented, etc.  This creates much resentment because even as children felt as if we were constantly “seducing” people into liking us. However the tools we learned to use to seduce people into liking us often are not the right tools for procuring the type of love that our hearts really yearn for later in life – they are more apt for procuring admiration.

Let me ask you: would you rather be admired or loved?

In an effort to individuate, sometimes we date people who are the exact opposite of one of our parents. Rebellion is an essential part of the individuation process – but it can also be inauthentic if it is only moving away from something rather than also moving towards something.

I believe that babies individuate the first time they see themselves in a mirror (as a “self” distinct from their mothers), then again when they go to pre-school or school for the first time but are still living in their parents’ homes; then again when if they go off to college away from home but have their parents still paying to support them; then again when they live away from their parents and learn how to support themselves as adults.  There is a tension between having to obey and depend on your parents and wanting to be your own person.  Note the spate of young people in the last 35-40 years who got tattoos early in life; this is a subconscious declaration, “I own my body and nobody can tell me what to do with it anymore (even if you’re still paying my rent).”

We are living in fascinatingly complex and often confusing times regarding gender roles, the ways we expect men and women to act.  We all agree that women should be paid equal salaries as men, yet many women still think that men should pay for meals as subconscious symbols of being providers and protectors.  There is a tension between wanting to be independent and wanting to be taken care of.

We have lived in a society that objectified women as sexy secretaries, waitresses, librarians, bank-tellers, store-clerks, nurses, etc. That archetype of the damsel in distress needing to be “saved” or taken care of – thankfully! – is dying.  But how do we move into the next paradigm of compassion, respect, equality and love?

One way is through conscious loving and authentic communications.  This is when we are mindfully aware of our wounds and how we learned to compensate for them as children. Usually there is some level of inauthenticity regarding these “assets.”  We must be aware of how we learned to seduce people into liking our “false selves” or personas and be brave enough to be authentic and vulnerable (which can be quite scary). And the first thing you need is a loving non-judgmental relationship with someone who is empathetic, loving and accepting of the whole you, not just the glitzy exteriors that we tend to choose to show the world – particularly the way we present our lives on the Internet.

Understanding Baker’s Cyst

Baker’s Cyst
A Baker’s cyst, also known as a popliteal cyst, is benign swelling found behind the knee that lies posterior to the medial femoral condyle.

2016-08-29-1472494424-9193140-BakersCyst3.PNG

The cyst is connected to the knee joint through a valvular opening.

2016-08-29-1472494452-9344980-BakersCyst4.PNG

Knee effusion (fluid on the knee) from intra-articular pathology or a meniscal tear, allows the fluid to go through the valve to the cyst in one direction. The cyst is located between the semimembranosus and medial gastrocnemius muscles, in the back of the knee.

2016-08-29-1472494490-1860893-BakersCyst6.PNG

Diagnosis
The patient usually has swelling behind the knee with pain, fullness, and tenderness. A baker’s cyst is easier to see with the knee fully extended. Diagnosis is confirmed by an MRI that will show the associated intra-articular pathology, usually a meniscal tear. An ultrasound may also be helpful. These tests are important, especially if the cyst is found to be outside of its typical position.

2016-08-29-1472494536-2992088-BakersCyst8.PNG

Causes
The two most common causes of Baker’s cysts are knee arthritis and meniscal tears.

Treatment
Treatment of painful, large cysts may include ice, compression wrapping, corticosteroid medication, strengthening exercises, aspiration of the cyst and/or excision of the cyst. Recurrence of Baker’s cysts is common if the intra-articular pathology is not corrected. The best treatment for a Baker’s cyst is arthroscopy and debridement of the intra-articular pathology.

2016-08-29-1472494583-993019-BakersCyst5.PNG

The cysts may burst causing calf pain and swelling. An examiner should rule out deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or thrombophlebitis.

Popliteal Cysts in Children
A popliteal cyst in children occurs as a soft tissue mass at the back of the knee. This type of cyst will occur more often in young boys than girls. They are asymptomatic and transilluminate. They are not considered a tumor. Popliteal cysts in children are treated by observation without surgery. They are not associated with a meniscal tear.

Anthony Weiner Reportedly Caught In Yet Another Sext Scandal

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), whose political career ended in disgrace after two sexting scandals, was apparently unable to put down his phone.

Weiner, 51, who’s married to top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, allegedly sent lurid tweets and photos of his crotch to another woman, the New York Post reported. One of the raunchy selfies included his young son in the background.

The woman who received the former Congressman’s photos has reportedly been chatting with him online since January 2015. She sent screenshots of their conversations to the Post and spoke to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity.

Although Weiner admitted to the newspaper that he and the woman had “been friends for some time,” he claimed they had never met in person.

In 2011, Weiner resigned from Congress ― and became the fodder of late night comedians ― after he accidentally posted a sexually explicit image of himself on Twitter. Although Weiner attempted to revive his political career in 2013 by running for New York City mayor, he lost the election amidst a second sexting scandal (the one where he used the alias Carlos Danger).

Afterward, Weiner mostly dropped out of the public eye, giving only occasional interviews with the media. He announced that he was undergoing therapy and vowed to focus on being a better father.

“Being a dad, that’s my job,” Weiner said in May on the “Here’s The Thing With Alec Baldwin” podcast.

In recent years, Weiner opened a consulting firm, became involved in a nonprofit restaurant and acted in the Syfy movie “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!” This past spring, his sexual and political escapades were featured in the documentary “Weiner.”

11 Habits of Ridiculously Likeable People

2016-08-25-1472165418-1528300-11HabitsofRidiculouslyLikeablePeopleHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that being likeable comes from natural, unteachable traits that belong only to a lucky few–the good looking, the fiercely social, and the incredibly talented. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception.

When I speak to smaller audiences, I often ask them to describe the most likeable people they have ever worked with. People inevitably ignore innate characteristics (intelligence, extraversion, attractiveness, and so on) and instead focus on qualities that are completely under people’s control, such as approachability, humility, and positivity.

These qualities, and others like them, describe people who are skilled in emotional intelligence (EQ). TalentSmart research data from more than a million people shows that people who possess these skills aren’t just highly likeable, they outperform those who don’t by a large margin. Ninety percent of top performers have high EQs, people with high EQs make $ 29,000 more annually than people with low EQs, and a single-point increase in your EQ adds $ 1,300 to your salary. I could go on and on.

Being likeable is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence. Unlike innate, fixed characteristics, such as your intelligence (IQ), EQ is a flexible skill that you can improve with effort.

To help you improve your EQ, I did some digging to uncover the key behaviors that emotionally intelligent people engage in that make them so likeable.

1. They are genuine. Being genuine and honest is essential to being likeable. No one likes a fake. People gravitate toward those who are genuine because they know they can trust them. It is difficult to like someone when you don’t know who they really are and how they really feel.

Likeable people know who they are. They are confident enough to be comfortable in their own skin. By concentrating on what drives you and makes you happy as an individual, you become a much more interesting person than if you attempt to win people over by making choices that you think will make them like you.

2. They ask thoughtful questions. The biggest mistake people make when it comes to listening is they’re so focused on what they’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect them that they fail to hear what’s being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost. A simple way to avoid this is to ask a lot of questions. People like to know you’re listening, and something as simple as a clarification question shows that not only are you listening, you also care about what they’re saying. You’ll be surprised how much respect and appreciation you gain just by asking questions.

3. They don’t pass judgment. If you want to be likeable you must be open-minded. Being open-minded makes you approachable and interesting to others. No one wants to have a conversation with someone who has already formed an opinion and is not willing to listen.

Having an open mind is crucial in the workplace where approachability means access to new ideas and help. To eliminate preconceived notions and judgment, you need to see the world through other people’s eyes. This doesn’t require you believe what they believe or condone their behavior, it simply means you quit passing judgment long enough to truly understand what makes them tick. Only then can you let them be who they are.

4. They don’t seek attention. People are averse to those who are desperate for attention. You don’t need to develop a big, extroverted personality to be likeable. Simply being friendly and considerate is all you need to win people over. When you speak in a friendly, confident, and concise manner, you will notice that people are much more attentive and persuadable than if you try to show them you’re important. People catch on to your attitude quickly and are more attracted to the right attitude than what–or how many people–you know.

When you’re being given attention, such as when you’re being recognized for an accomplishment, shift the focus to all the people who worked hard to help you get there. This may sound cliché, but if it’s genuine, the fact that you pay attention to others and appreciate their help will show that you’re appreciative and humble–two adjectives that are closely tied to likeability.

5. They are consistent. Few things make you more unlikeable than when you’re all over the place. When people approach you, they like to know whom they’re dealing with and what sort of response they can expect. To be consistent you must be reliable, and you must ensure that even when your mood goes up and down it doesn’t affect how you treat other people.

6. They use positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation.

It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

7. They leave a strong first impression.
Research shows most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this you can take advantage of it to make huge gains in your likeability. First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Strong posture, a firm handshake, smiling, and opening your shoulders to the person you are talking to will help ensure that your first impression is a good one.

8. They greet people by name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. Likeable people make certain they use others’ names every time they see them. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet him. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation.

If you’re great with faces but have trouble with names, have some fun with it and make remembering people’s names a brain exercise. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask her name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep her name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see her.

9. They smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good as a result.

10. They know who to touch (and they touch them). When you touch someone during a conversation, you release oxytocin in their brain, a neurotransmitter that makes their brain associate you with trust and a slew of other positive feelings. A simple touch on the shoulder, a hug, or a friendly handshake is all it takes to release oxytocin. Of course, you have to touch the right person in the right way to release oxytocin, as unwanted or inappropriate touching has the opposite effect. Just remember, relationships are built not just from words, but also from general feelings about each other. Touching someone appropriately is a great way to show you care.

11. They balance passion and fun. People gravitate toward those who are passionate. That said, it’s easy for passionate people to come across as too serious or uninterested because they tend to get absorbed in their work. Likeable people balance their passion with the ability to have fun. At work they are serious, yet friendly. They still get things done because they are socially effective in short amounts of time and they capitalize on valuable social moments. They minimize small talk and gossip and instead focus on having meaningful interactions with their coworkers. They remember what you said to them yesterday or last week, which shows that you’re just as important to them as their work.

Bringing It All Together

Likeable people are invaluable and unique. They network with ease, promote harmony in the workplace, bring out the best in everyone around them, and generally seem to have the most fun. Add these skills to your repertoire and watch your likeability soar!

Someone Using The Email Address Of Trump’s Doctor Demanded Money For An Interview

Someone using an email address connected to Harold Bornstein, Donald Trump’s doctor, apparently doesn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to cash in on the GOP presidential nominee’s campaign.

Bornstein wrote a letter in December saying Trump would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.” The doctor told NBC News on Friday that he had written the letter in five minutes while a limo waited outside.

A Huffington Post reader pointed out that the letter mentioned a website that wasn’t actually registered until several months after the endorsement of Trump’s health was written, so I sent an email on Saturday afternoon to the Gmail address listed in the letter’s header

Someone replied from the address a little after 1 a.m. on Sunday, saying he or she wanted money to talk.

“325 per hour in advance,” the person wrote.

I asked the person to confirm that they were in fact Trump’s doctor. HuffPost would not pay for an interview, I wrote, but would this person still be willing to answer some questions?

The response was curt: “No.”

Was he or she declining to do an interview, or were saying they weren’t Trump’s doctor?

“Yes, no,” the person wrote back.

I was still confused, so I phrased the question more directly: “You are Mr. Trump’s doctor and wrote the letter attesting to his health, correct?”

“No interview, senza soldi,” the person wrote back, using an Italian phrase that means “without money.”

“Are you Donald Trump’s doctor. Yes or no?” I asked.

“Quanti soldi?” the person wrote back, which means “how much money?” in Italian.

A follow-up question was also answered in Italian, and also referenced money.

Finally, I asked why the person was writing to me in Italian. I didn’t receive a response.

Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the exchange.

Gizmodo reported on Friday that a photo of Bornstein appears to show that he uses Windows XP, an outdated operating system that could make a computer less secure. Not using an up-to-date operating system may violate the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, according to the outlet.

Jennifer Gunter, an OB/GYN, wrote in HuffPost blog post earlier this month that it was unusual for a doctor to list a Gmail address on a professional letter because the email service is not a secure method of communication.

Both Trump and Hillary Clinton ― the two oldest candidates to face off against each other in a presidential election ― have released limited data about their health. Trump and his surrogates have peddled the suggestion, unsubstantiated by evidence, that Clinton is concealing something about her health.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

The Light Through The Woods: Dreams Of Survival Of Human Soul In The Age Of Technology

The Light Through The Woods: Dreams Of Survival Of Human Soul In The Age Of Technology

<p>In his second compilation of poetry, Kashmiri-American poet Maharaj Kaul explores the shimmering emptiness of modern life. </p>

<p>From the author of <i>Meditations On Time and Inclinations And Reality: The Search For The Absolut</i>e comes an exciting new book of poetry, <i>The Light Through The Woods</i>. In it the poet bemoans how modern man has sacrificed his inner freedom and natural joy in living by creating and believing in the present culture of materialism and technology. He believes that man is born with inner freedom, joy, grandeur, and grace but as he grows up the existing culture corrupts him to realize these powerful elements. He strongly urges man to spiritually reconnect with nature to regain his soul. </p>

<p>The poems also celebrate the poet's stunningly beautiful birthplace, Kashmir, India, and express his joy in reminiscing about his childhood there as well as his sadness as he contemplates the wastefulness of its political struggles and the tragic dispossession and diaspora of his people, Kashmiri Pandits. </p>

<p>The poems also reflect on the drama of human condition and the search of the human values. </p>

<p>A visionary collection of poems dreaming of man regaining his natural inner beauty.</p>

White Lives Matter To Be Listed As Hate Group By Southern Poverty Law Center

White Lives Matter will soon be listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

SPLC said the status will be reflected in the next update of its “Hate Map,” which tracks the activities of hate groups around the country.

“I can’t speak to how many chapters will be listed, but it’s clear that the leadership of the group, the ends of the group ― it’s just a flat-out white supremacist group,” Heidi Beirich, director of the center’s Intelligence Report, told the Houston Chronicle. “The ideology behind it, the racist leaders, everything about it is racist.”

White Lives Matter made headlines earlier this month when the group sent armed protesters to an NAACP office in Houston, where they waved Confederate flags.

Their organizations and their people are shooting people based on the color of their skin,” White Lives Matter member Ken Reed told the Houston Chronicle at the time. “We’re not.”

However, the Anti-Defamation League said the protest was organized by the white supremacist organization Aryan Renaissance Society:

“During the August 21 protest, the ARS symbol, a lightning bolt and a runic symbol, was visible on the group’s ‘white lives matter’ banner and on white shirts worn by some of the dozen or so participants. Their message also included a sign reading ‘14 words,’ a reference to the most popular white supremacist slogan in the world: ‘We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.’

The SPLC said in a blog post that one of the leaders of White Lives Matter was Rebecca Barnette, a 40-year-old Tennessee woman “who is also vice president of the women’s division of the racist skinhead group Aryan Strikeforce.” Barnette was also allegedly involved in the National Socialist Movement, the country’s largest neo-Nazi group, SPLC said.

While those organizations are already known as hate groups, the addition of White Lives Matter will be new to the map.

“We are listing them because they are clearly white supremacists,” Beirich told VICE News. “Their motto should be ‘only white lives matter.’”

Although some called for Black Lives Matter to be listed as a hate group after the shooting deaths of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, that organization doesn’t hold supremacist or separatist views and its leaders have condemned violence.

The SPLC said in a blog post last month:

There’s no doubt that some protesters who claim the mantle of Black Lives Matter have said offensive things, like the chant ‘pigs in a blanket, fry ‘em like bacon’ that was heard at one rally. But before we condemn the entire movement for the words of a few, we should ask ourselves whether we would also condemn the entire Republican Party for the racist words of its presumptive nominee ― or for the racist rhetoric of many other politicians in the party over the course of years.

The next update to the “Hate Map” is expected in February.

This Wonderful Thing Called Our Twenties

I just dropped off an old friend at the airport and drove home as the sun was setting. It’s San Francisco, so it was perfect weather for my commute home. A song I really liked came on as I pulled away and there it was: my perfect life, right in front of me.

I’m 23, I’m struggling in the job market scene, and I’m constantly living in a state of unfamiliarity.

There’s nobody that can explain to you how life after college really feels. There’s nothing to compare it to. One day you’re with your friends and the weather is perfect and you’re all laughing about something stupid. The next day you’re getting chewed out by a boss or you see your friend getting married and you have an existential crisis.

This is our twenties.

And they’re a rollercoaster.

This section of our lives is the part we were always trying to get to, but most times now we end up wondering why.

Why does the world keep screwing with us so much? Why are we now so uncertain of things we used to be certain of? Why is there somebody shooting up a club? Why don’t we get the same respect that we show to others? Why aren’t things fair?

Then you run into an unforgettable day. You hike a mountain with friends and breathe in new air and sit on the side of a cliff wondering how in the hell you got there. What did you do to deserve a day like this? There’s suddenly nothing wrong.

Then you take a flight back to reality.

There’s a date that’s scheduled on Thursday with someone you really like, but you’re not certain they’re the one. Your parents give you a call and you talk about the usual. Your sister just got engaged. When did she get that old?

Most days are filler to get to those few hours where the universe ignites and you’re there, on the edge of figuring it all out.

It’s so real and so vibrant and so exciting, and then you’re suddenly driving home in the darkness.

We’re alone now.

We’re alone in the decisions that we make, which means we’re also alone when those decisions fall through in the worst way.

What should we do when we’re uncertain and the clock is ticking? Every choice seems so gigantic.

But that’s the power of our twenties. It’s finally up to us. The universe is hurling a lot of things our way, but it’s also poised to bow to our wishes.

Yes, there’s tough days. There’s moments when we snap and we wish that we were home and that we were ten years younger. But there’s also days where we’re sitting on the side of a mountain looking out at the earth, realizing that it’s ours for the taking.

Our twenties.

It’s our time to hurt, it’s our time to laugh, but most of all it’s our time to figure it all out. What should it all mean? Does it matter to figure it out right now?

Maybe you should go climb the mountain. Maybe you should call that old friend you’ve been ignoring. Maybe you should stare deeply into that person’s eyes and tell them they’re absolutely beautiful.

There’s no guide map now. There’s nobody to tell us where to go. But every decision that we make shows us who we are more and more until we slowly piece ourselves together into the person that we want to be.

This is our twenties. They’re scary, they’re fun, but sometimes they’re simply wonderful.

For Presidential Candidates, 70 is the new 45

by Dr. Mehmet Oz & Dr. Michael Roizen

Controversy blossomed this week surrounding the health of our presidential candidates. That’s because we’re heading into this fall’s presidential election knowing relatively little about the medical history of either major-party candidate, and at 68 and 70, respectively, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump would be among the oldest people ever elected to the office of the president. Ronald Reagan, the oldest so far, was 69 when he was elected to his first term, 73 for his second term, and 77 when he left office. Only 10 of our 43 presidents entered office older than 60.

For many of us, the health of the president is an important issue when casting our ballots. While we don’t and shouldn’t take someone’s age or health into consideration when hiring for a typical job, the role of the president is an extraordinary position. Health is also one of our nation’s most important issues, and a healthy president sets a better example for us all to follow.

Some say that in this election, the health of the candidates is even more important than ever, because of their chronological age. We understand this concern, because aging can definitely affect stamina and mental quickness. On average, we (kidneys, liver, heart, even bone mass, and brain functioning) decline 5 percent every 10 years. So by age 70, your IQ is, on average, 20% lower than at age 30. In addition, we have examined the medical records of all of the presidents since Teddy Roosevelt and found that after someone gets into the Oval Office, they age two years for every one year on the job.

But while the calendar age of Secretary Clinton and Donald Trump would traditionally qualify them as elderly, today we also know that a president’s real age is more important than his/her chronological age. Your real age is determined by your habits and environment. For those who engage in the healthiest habits and are in the healthiest environments, 70 truly is the new 45. As a result of improvements in public health and medicine, all Americans, on average, live much longer than when we elected our first president 227 years ago. Over just the last 100 years, average life expectancy has increased more than 20 years, from around 55 in 1916 to nearly 79 today.

These life expectancy numbers are typically based on averages, but no matter your political preference, everyone can surely agree that our presidential candidates are far from average in many ways. We know that social determinants, such as educational level and income, are among the most important factors for longevity. The more education you have, where you live, and your job correlate with how long you live and how healthy you are. According to research, women and men with 16 or more years of education (Secretary Clinton has 19 and Mr. Trump has 16) are expected to have an increase in life span as much as 8 and 13 years respectively. In addition, those in the highest income brackets (again, this includes both candidates) have been estimated to have a life expectancy about 14.6 years longer than those in the lowest income brackets. These social advantages suggest that both candidates are likely to have a longer life expectancy than most voters – a fact that we hope the winning candidate will address while in office so as to improve the health of everyone in our nation.

Fortunately, healthy habits in our control are even more important for our health than our social situation. Data from the nation’s biggest health studies, including the Nurse’s Health Study, the Health Professional’s Study, and the Medicare Studies suggest that chronic disease is reduced by 80-90% and cognitive function improved in people who engage in the “six healthy habits” and are up-to-date on their immunizations. The more of these healthy habits you have, the younger relative to your calendar age you are. We estimate that someone who has all six of these habits has the cognitive abilities of someone more than ten years younger than their chronological age. These six healthy habits include eating right, managing stress, being socially connected, being physically active, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol, and getting enough sleep. While we don’t have perfect data on the candidate’s health and all of their habits, we can make some inferences from what we’ve seen in the media.

Just the act of actively campaigning for the past 16 or so months indicates that the candidates are able to tolerate substantial stress. They are both very social and connected to strong, supportive families and the people they meet every day. Secretary Clinton enjoys exercising regularly and Mr. Trump plays golf. We would bet that they also both get in a lot of steps pounding the pavement and shaking hands. We also know that neither candidate smokes nor drinks much, if any, alcohol. Now, according to reports in the media, when it comes to eating, Secretary Clinton (who tries to eat healthfully) may be doing a better job than Mr. Trump (who often eats fast food), and neither of them is getting much sleep. While we don’t have all of their data, it’s fair to say that they are both mentally sharper than the “average” person with their chronological age, and from a health perspective, likely fit to be president.

Nixon and Trump, Birds of a Feather

The distrust that most Americans feel for politicians is easily traceable back to forty-four years ago and the deceits, outright lies and dark personality quirks of Richard Nixon.

Who can forget his pious pledge of his undefined “Plan to End the War,” after learning that his plan was really to win the war by increasing the bombing of Southeast Asia four-fold? Or his proclamation: “I am not a crook”?

Who can not feel shame over his personal decision to order the invasion of the small, neutral country of Cambodia, bombing it to devastation and leading directly to the deaths of two million of the nation’s six million at the hands of their own countrymen?

Who can forget that Republican convention of roaring worshipers of Nixon 1972, with the exuberant shouts of “Four more years, four more years” for their hero? But among those worshipers, how many really knew Nixon?

It was only two years later, with the release of his secret tapes, that Americans saw what an evil, paranoid, lying individual Nixon really was. He had been able to hide his true personality from the public, and any sane person who voted for him had to recoil in shame.

I remember the words of his chief Domestic Advisor, John Ehrlichman, at the Safford Penitentiary in Arizona. Asked about the Nixon he had faithfully served in the White House for five years, Ehrlichman replied: “I really never got to know him.”

Who today can truthfully say they know the real Donald Trump?

We have survived the lies of the Johnson Administration that led Congress to approve the disastrous war in Viet Nam… and the lies of the Bush administration that led to congressional approval for the invasion of Iraqi n 2003. But can we survive the unpredictable emotional reactions, and potentially irrational decisions of a president who has the sole power to trigger the use of atomic weapons against foreign countries?

That nuclear trigger in its black box is required to be within a few feet of the President at all times. As Commander in Chief, the power to pull the trigger is in his hands alone. No General or Admiral can countermand an order from a man who has talked and acted very much like that insane and patriotic Air Force General in Dr. Strangelove.

This election it is not a matter of party politics. It is a matter of doing the most we can to achieve the survival of the human race.

Republican Member of Congress, 1967-83.

In Silence I Heard A Voice, It Was My Own

I’ve had the good fortune recently to have a great deal of space and time to myself living out in the country. If “time is money” in the city, then the country is Fort Knox. Things move slower out here where things like the brute tango between a rooster and his chickens serves as entertainment. Living with nature has given me the luxury of a much needed step back from the incessant demands of life back in the city. I’ve been able to reassess my priorities, and recalibrate the value I assign to the people, places and things in my life. It’s remarkable how an open, natural setting after a long stint in a crowded city can reground us. I can actually hear myself think out here. For the first time, in a long while, I’m listening to my inner voice again.

Some of us have had the luxury of a much needed vacation on a remote beach somewhere, where there is nothing but empty space and time to indulge on our own inner voice. We get stressed and need vacations precisely because our daily demands too often do not align with that voice. Then, usually towards the end of the vacation, when we can finally hear ourselves think again, we resolve to keep that inner dialogue going when we get back home — only to lose it before lunch on the first day at the office. We may even hear this voice from time to time outside of vacations, but it seems to surface just in time for our phone, buzzing with a notification, to let us know what we should really be thinking about.

We each have a unique voice within us that originates from the natural flow of what’s happening in each moment. It isn’t the voice that imposes the ego’s expectations on life. Instead, it gives us brilliant insights to life’s biggest challenges, while serving the highest good. That is, if we can even hear the voice to begin with. You see, the voice that offers the best guidance doesn’t scream at us or demand that we listen to it. It doesn’t interrupt or boast like an advertisement or a salesman, trying to convince us that we don’t already have everything we need. It’s a quiet, humble voice. It doesn’t tell you to get more things, instead it helps you to let things go.

Stripping away the excesses that drown out our inner voice comes from living cleanly and simply. If you’ve ever done a cleansing diet that removes solid food for a time, you know the life-changing benefits of having a clean gut. Once clean, we can add foods back into to our diets one at a time so that we can more accurately identify the ones that cause us problems. It’s the same with our stomachs as it is with our minds. To truly thrive, we must set aside enough time to cleanse our thoughts. Only then can the smog of fear dissipate from our minds. And then, when we’re ready based on our own needs, we can rebuild by adding things back in one at a time. Without this process of deep cleansing for our minds, we might never find what’s holding us back from realizing our life’s true purpose.

My heartfelt wish is that every one of you and the people you care about can find a way to create the space and time you need to hear and heed your own inner voice. I know it feels impossible sometimes. But when things are the craziest is when we most need to take a step back and reassess. We don’t need more people selling us solutions to our problems, we have no shortage of that. What we need are more ways to help ourselves find enough silence to hear our own voices again. I found mine out in the country and it said to write this post. Where will you find yours?

Here’s What Parents Of Kids With Life-Threatening Allergies Think Of The EpiPen Price Increases

Jennifer DiMercurio’s 7-year-old son, Liam, relies on the EpiPen, an auto injector used to treat anaphylactic shock, to save his life in the case of a severe allergic reaction. The device delivers a dose of epinephrine that’s worth about $ 1. But over the past nine years, Mylan, the pharmaceutical company which makes the EpiPen, has increased the price of the patented injecting device from $ 100 to $ 600.

That increase put the DiMercurios in a bind. In January 2015, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job that didn’t include health insurance. The family turned to the private market, where they found a plan that would cover Liam and Jennifer, who had developed a Latex allergy ― but it had a hefty deductible. So on two occasions, after using up their stash to save each others’ lives, the family had to borrow funds from relatives to replace their EpiPens.

This summer, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job ― one that came with good health insurance. But the family couldn’t afford to buy the year’s EpiPens until the new insurance kicked in.

So for four months, they had to rely on expired models.

“I was scared to take my son out, especially as summer was coming ― even at the grocery store I’d be more worried and more on alert because I’ll be afraid,” DiMercurio said. “Especially having to use them myself I’ve seen now how important it is to use it quickly and how fast it happens, and you don’t know if your pen is going to work because it’s expired.”

Presidential candidates, politicians and the press have spent the past week slamming Mylan for the price increases. Since no rival generic products have Food and Drug Administration approval, Mylan has an almost complete monopoly. Mylan’s CEO Heather Bresch, who is the daughter of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), announced Thursday that the company would not cut the price of the injectors, but would increase the maximum it would offer to families in its copay assistance program from $ 100 to $ 300.

Parents of children with life-threatening allergies are still worried.

“So many of us are wondering if we’re going to be able to pay our mortgage if we pay for the pens,” DiMercurio said. “It’s bad enough when kids’ lives are lost just because they didn’t use an EpiPen quickly enough, but to not have it for a financial reason is despicable. It’s all we have and Mylan monopolized the market.”

FINANCIAL SACRIFICE

Aleasa Word, a working single mom in Atlanta, started saving last September to buy enough EpiPens for her two kids with food allergies to make it through the school year. The packs expire, so they need to be replaced each year, even if they aren’t used. Even with her insurance, a two-pack of EpiPens (they’re only sold in sets of two) costs her about $ 600, and she needs four packs to cover both her children ― one for each of them to carry, and one for each of them to have at school.

That comes out to a total of $ 2,400.

“I am willing to sacrifice whatever I need to sacrifice to get my children their medication,” Word said. “EpiPen is not optional in my house. I can’t not have it.”

Joy Velozo, a mother from Massachusetts, said she worries about the impact the price increase has on families that can no longer afford them. Her son, who will be 12 at the end of the month, is allergic to all nuts, eggs and shellfish. He has been home-schooled since last year in part because his local school would not guarantee that he would not be exposed to allergens in the upper classes, where students switch desks and classrooms throughout the day.

“I can’t imagine having to pay full price to have four sets of EpiPens to know he was covered in every situation,” she said.

Julianne DeNicola’s 7-year-old son, Joseph, died after he came into contact with pizza oil that had touched cheese ― enough to set off his extreme dairy allergy. Although his father administered an EpiPen shortly after his reaction, Joseph didn’t get the drug fast enough.

“This isn’t just an over-the-counter product,” DeNicola said. “This is Russian Roulette. You can’t put a price tag on life.”

DeNicola said she has talked to other parents who say they have been forced to choose between a mortgage payment, putting aside money for college tuition, or buying a new set of EpiPens.

RISING RISKS

Other parents told HuffPost they’d heard of families splitting packs ― one EpiPen for home, one to carry ― as the cost of EpiPens has risen. This is dangerous. EpiPens are sold in packs of two in case someone needs more than one dose or the first EpiPen fails to deploy due to user error.

The possibility that more families could end up splitting the EpiPen packs terrifies Georgina Cornago Cipriano. She became an food allergy activist after her 14-year-old son, Giovanni, accidentally ingested something with peanuts and died.

“It’s becoming a luxury to be able to have an EpiPen. There are people that have multiple children with food allergies ― how can you afford them?” Cipriano asked. “You have to have more than one set. And you have to have two everywhere you go ― you never know if the first one could malfunction. You don’t know if the first one is going to be enough.”

When asked about families splitting the packs, DiMercurio said that she once had to use two of the EpiPens at the same time on her own son to get his reaction under control. But she’s had to rely on expired pens herself, so she understands the inclination to cut corners for cost.

THE NECESSITY FOR ACCESS

In September 2013, Josephine Espinosa’s 13-year-old son Cameron was bitten by a swarm of fire ants during a football huddle in Corpus Christi, Texas. He’d had no previous allergy issues ― much like 25 percent of children who suffer their first allergic reaction in school ― but the mix of ant bites and adrenaline caused a severe allergic reaction that killed him.

The school did not have an EpiPen on hand, which Josephine believes could have saved his life.

“Once I found out an EpiPen could have saved my son, I knew I had to do something so that other parents don’t have to go through what we go through every day,” Espinosa said.

Last summer, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed Senate Bill 66, known as the Cameron Espinosa Act, into law, which requires public and charter schools in Texas to stock EpiPens and train staff on how to use them. Last school year was the first the law went into effect.

“It does give me a little peace of mind that [this is the law in Texas],” Espinosa said. “This is a nightmare, every day is a struggle. No parent should have to go through that.”

Eleven states in the country require all schools to carry EpiPens. The law in Texas does not apply to private schools.

Many emergency vehicles do not carry EpiPens or epinephrine on board. And many basic emergency medical technicians do not have access or may not be allowed to administer anything other than the patient’s own EpiPen, according to Food Allergy Research & Education, a nonprofit that advocates for the 15 million Americans who suffer from food allergies.

THE FEAR NEVER GOES AWAY

Parents of children with food allergies wonder every day if they’re going to get a phone call saying their child is having a life-threatening reaction, Velozo said.

The parents of those who have lost a child “are like the salespeople for EpiPens,” DeNicola said. “We’re the advocates on why they need to have it.”

“We walk on land mines every single day,” said Word, who organizes Love Remembers Day, an annual commemoration for those who have lost a loved one to food-induced anaphylaxis.

“I hate to get the phone call, I hate to get the emails,” she said. “And I don’t want to have a conversation on Love Remembers Day, and it’s because someone couldn’t afford their EpiPen.”

Ice Cube Takes Down Donald Trump In 1 Devastating Tweet

Ice Cube told the world exactly what he thinks of Donald Trump on Saturday.

The rapper-turned-actor made his views on the GOP presidential nominee crystal clear after an old Bloomberg Politics interview, in which he appeared to praise the former reality TV personality, was circulated online by Trump supporters.

I will never endorse a mothafucka like Donald Trump! EVER!!!” Ice Cube, whose real name is O’Shea Jackson, posted on Twitter. His tweet immediately viral, and by early Sunday had garnered more than 15,000 likes and 9,000 retweets.

A representative for the former N.W.A. star told the New York Daily News that his post was a direct response to this tweet:

The tweet, from an account that posts pro-Trump news links, claimed the 47-year-old star was endorsing the Republican candidate in this November’s election.

It pointed to the April interview, in which he said Trump “looks like a boss to everybody and Americans love to have a boss,” as proof. With his explicit tweet, however, Ice Cube has proved that truly isn’t the case.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

13 Questions That Will Change Your Life

2016-08-18-1471552531-5357259-13QuestionsThatWillChangeYourLifeHP.jpg

When things aren’t going quite the way you’d like them to, it’s often the result of not asking yourself the right questions. Some questions are hard to confront because you’re afraid you won’t get the answer you want, others because you really don’t want to know the answer.

But the best things in life don’t come easily, and turning away from life’s toughest questions is a sure path to mediocrity. I believe that Socrates said it best:

“The unexamined life isn’t worth living.”

Socrates’ observation also applies to business. When Eric Schmidt was CEO of Google, he famously said, “We run this company on questions, not answers.”

Life, like business, runs on questions, not answers. Let’s take a closer look at some of the tough questions we should be asking ourselves regularly.

1. How do people see me differently than I see myself?

Have you ever heard a recording of your voice and thought, “Is that what I really sound like?” Because of the way the sound of the voice travels through the human skull, we never hear ourselves the same way that everybody else hears us. The same is often true for the way we behave. We interpret our behavior in terms of how we think we come across, whereas everyone else sees the real thing. A 360° assessment is a great way to gain this perspective. It gathers feedback that is constructive, anonymous, and accurate. If you forego the 360 and solicit feedback in person, make certain you ask for feedback that is specific, avoiding broad questions and generalizations. For example, you’re more likely to get an honest and accurate answer to, “How well did I handle myself in the meeting when everyone disagreed with me?” than to, “Am I a good boss?” And be careful to show that you’re receptive to the feedback. If you flip out or get defensive every time somebody speaks their mind, they’re going to stop doing it.

2. What/whom did I make better today?

That’s another way of saying, “Leave things better than you found them.” Ending each day by asking yourself what or whom you made better is a great way to keep yourself grounded and focused on what really matters.

3. Am I being true to my values?

Do you ever get that nagging feeling that something is a little off in your life? This often happens when little behaviors creep up on you that violate your values. If spending quality time with your family is one of your primary values, but you keep staying late at work, there’s a conflict. If you want that nagging little voice to go away, you’re going to have to do something about it.

4. If I achieved all of my goals, how would I feel? What can I do to feel that way as I work to achieve them?

The ability to delay gratification in pursuit of your goals is one of the most fundamental prerequisites for success, but delaying gratification doesn’t have to mean being miserable until you cross that finish line. You can achieve more–and have more fun doing it–if you let yourself feel some of that pride and pleasure along the way.

5. What haven’t I taken the time to learn about?

It’s a big world out there, and it’s getting bigger all the time. Scientists have theorized that it once took 1,500 years for the accumulated knowledge in the world to double; now it only takes a year or two. Don’t get caught behind.

6. In what areas of my life am I settling?

When you settle, you accept less than you’re capable of. Sometimes we settle in dead-end jobs. Other times we settle for unhealthy relationships. If you don’t ask yourself where and why you’re settling, it’s hard to stop it.

7. What do I want my life to be like in five years?

Lewis Carroll once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” The corollary is that, once you have your destination in mind, you can plan your route. Five years is the perfect timeframe: It’s not so far in the future that you can’t imagine yourself there, but it’s not so close that you can’t do anything about it.

8. What would I do if I wasn’t scared?

From a survival perspective, fear has its purpose. It’s what keeps us from sticking our hand in the washing machine or any of the million other things that could get us hurt or killed. But fear has a tendency to get carried away. Instead of keeping you safe, it keeps you from improving your life and living your dreams.

9. Who has qualities that I aspire to develop?

When people have qualities that you admire, it’s a great exercise to reflect on these qualities and think about ways that you can incorporate them into your repertoire.

10. What problem are we solving?

Have you ever been in a meeting and suddenly realized that not everyone was having the same conversation? Not because people were talking over each other, but because they had different ideas about the purpose of the discussion. Sometimes it helps to put the topic on the whiteboard when you’re having a meeting. This makes certain everyone knows why they’re there.

11. What’s stopping me from doing the things that I should be doing?

It’s easy to shrug your shoulders and say, “I don’t know what to do,” but that’s just an excuse. Most of the time, we know exactly what we should be doing; we just aren’t willing to move the obstacles out of the way.

12. Will you be my mentor?

It’s an intimidating question to ask, but few people will turn you down. Everyone likes being looked up to, and it feels good to share our knowledge with others.

13. What’s the most important lesson I’ve learned so far in life? Am I living that lesson?

Sometimes life lulls us back into complacency and we’re forced to learn a powerful lesson twice. The trouble with this is that it’s just as much of a rude awakening the second time around.

Bringing It All Together

Asking the hard questions can be extremely uncomfortable. But we don’t learn and grow by sticking with what’s comfortable.

What other questions should people be asking? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Why Does My Hip Click?

Snapping Hip
Snapping hip is an audible clicking or snapping sensation caused by hip movement that can be painful. There are a variety of reasons patients present with a clicking or snapping sensation in the hip. A click in the hip can be the result of the following: a labral tear, iliotibial band syndrome, psoas bursitis, psoas tendon snap, and arthritis of the hip. It is essential for physicians to understand each cause to provide an effective course of treatment.

Labral Tear
A labral tear is a common cause for clicking sensations in the hip joint. The labrum refers to the ring of cartilage surrounding the socket of ball-and-socket joints. The labrum of the hip is essential in providing stability to the joint. This same ring of cartilage can be found in the shoulder.

Labral tears can be the result of degenerative or traumatic processes. Degenerative labral tears can occur from repetitive motions or osteoarthritis. Traumatic labral tears can occur from injury or dislocation of the joint. Femoroacetabular impingement is a common cause of a labral tear. Impingement occurs when the proximal femur abuts the acetabulum with movement of the hip. This occurs especially in hip flexion. A patient with a labral tear will usually present with complaints of a clicking or a locking sensation in the joint. In addition, a patient will present with pain in the hip or groin, stiffness and decreased range of motion.

Diagnoses
To diagnose a labral tear, physicians will utilize a combination of physical examinations, imaging and diagnostic injections. MRI arthrograms are typically utilized to diagnose a labral tear, while injections are then used to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for a labral tear can range from conservative modalities to surgical intervention. Conservative treatments include anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy and injection. If conservative treatment fails, arthroscopic surgery may be needed to debride or repair the tear and the impingement can be addressed at the same time.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome.
Iliotibial band syndrome is another common cause of snapping hip. The thickened iliotibial band snaps over the bony greater trochanter of the femur. The patient may develop trochanteric bursitis, adhesions, gluteus maximus inflammation or edema.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis of iliotibial band syndrome can be done by direct palpation of the greater trochanter. This can be accomplished by placing a patient on their side, while putting the hip into extension and rotation until a “pop” is heard or felt. The patient can reproduce the snapping and sometimes this moment is physically seen.

Ober’s Test
The Ober’s test is the best clinical examination for assessing the tightness of the iliotibial band. To perform the Ober’s test the patient will lay on their side with the unaffected leg on the bottom. The examiner will slowly abduct the leg with the knee in flexion and the hip in extension. When the iliotibial band is tight, the test is positive. In a positive test the patient will be unable to adduct the leg and the knees will not come together.

Iliopsoas Tendon Snap
Iliopsoas tendon snap is the result of movement over the iliopectineal eminence. The iliopsoas tendon will snap over the pelvic brim. It is caused by inflammation of the bursa that lies between the front of the hip joint and the iliopsoas muscle or tendon. Diagnosis is usually difficult, the ultrasound or MRI may be normal or it may reveal fluid anterior to the hip joint (bursitis). An iliopsoas injection can be diagnostic. Abduction and external rotation and hearing the snap or the click of the hip will support this diagnosis.

Hip Arthritis
A click in the hip can also result from arthritis in the hip joint. Arthritis leads to the loss of cartilage between the head of the femur and the acetabulum. Without adequate cartilage, there is bone-on-bone interaction that causes pain, tenderness and inflammation of the hip joint. Patients will present with stiffness (limited movement), clicking in the hip joint, pain worsening with activity, and tenderness in the groin and hip. Physicians will utilize a combination of physical examinations and X-rays to identify loss of cartilage. Treatment for hip arthritis can be conservative or surgical. With severe arthritis a hip replacement will be needed to remove and replace the arthritic joint.
